One of my friend forwarded me this bold new campaign launched by SickKids hospital, Toronto to raise funds. I found it very inspiring to share. It is actually just a trailer showcasing the real life heroes displaying such a mighty courage. They may look tiny to us, but their strength and zest to fight back is unbeatable.

Peyton is a 5 yr old child diagnosed with myocarditis and underwent a transplant recently. His bicycle ride through the hospital wearing a ventricular assist device proved to be inspirational for this campaign. It is not just him but so many more such kids in this battle. Be it a kid with bone cancer playing hockey, or a child with brittle bone disease standing tall in leg braces in the Ad.

It made me think about “sickness, ailments and health” with a totally different perspective. Sick isn’t weak..& it is so true. Sickness is in our attitude. It is what we “let” our minds think “we are”. Sickness is first born in our mind and attitude. It is the way we look at ourselves when sick. Any sickness, big or small, cannot become our identity. There is more to our life beyond the barriers of sickness. We easily label ourselves when affected by health issues as less fortunate, ill fated, sick and defeated by life, failing to give ourselves the dignity  of a fighter. Sickness doesn’t define us, label us as incapable. It is our attitude of giving up makes us weak, incapable and even more sick. May be, somewhere, we imbibe this thinking in the minds of our children who are completely unaware of the predicament. Why can’t we take this opportunity and rather redefine this battle of mind versus body with a fierce fighting spirit ?

I also observe this strange “sickness” in the mental framework of our society in the way it looks at the sick.. how it treats them, perceives their problems as a major limitation to live like others.

We, the so called healthy people “label” the health warriors as underprivileged, less fortunate souls, shower sympathy on them, when all they need is encouragement and empathy. Why can’t we deal with them with more dignity, like any other normal individual?

This brings another question to my mind… who is really sick? The one who fights it day in and day out with dignity and integrity, or our sombre society, that fails to give them “dignity” and identity  as a “normal individual”, by labelling them sick?

Life can never be perfect for anyone. Stop projecting it to be perfect. Be the change you want to see. Don’t feel any less being differently abled, don’t feel incomplete without a “normalcy” label.

This life , however it is , is beautiful and God’s only gift to you that will last for your lifetime. Let it be a masterpiece in its own way!!

Stay blessed! Stay positive.

Trishna.
